We met at my sister’s bachelorette party at Jefferson Hall. I approached John and asked him to buy a drink for my sister. It took some persuasion, but he came through and bought her a drink and then continued to talk to me the rest of the night!
John proposed on our 3 year anniversary. We went to Mitchell’s Fish Market at Newport on the Levee, where we had our first date. While walking back to our car on the banks of the river, he got down on one knee, presented the ring and said, “Jamie, will you make a man out of me?”
The biggest thing that made our day special to us was having our best friends and closest family members a part of our celebration. Also, John’s mom is in a wheelchair. Since she could not participate in the Mother/Son dance at the reception, we surprised her with a slideshow full of pictures of John and her, which we played in place of the dance. It was a very emotional experience, and it has become a memory that we will always cherish.
One of the biggest challenges we faced was making decisions that we both agreed on! Because we had a hard time making decisions, it caused procrastination, which caused high stress in the last couple months before the big day. My advice to future brides is to not overthink things and try to get things done early! It will make the experience much more enjoyable.
My goal was to work with people I know and trust, while also keeping cost in mind. I chose my photographer with the help of one of my bridesmaids, who is also a photographer. Melanie came highly recommended by her, and for good reason! Our florist is the mother of a friend of mine. After seeing pictures of her work, it was an easy decision to go with her. Our DJ was also the DJ for my sister’s wedding reception a few years ago and did a great job. We chose our baker based on word-of-mouth reviews. We heard wonderful things about Marilyn’s Cakes, and my mom told me early on to “book her before it’s too late!” Our church was also an easy choice. In addition to the beauty of the church, it also has significance to John and me. John’s best man was married in the church a few years back, and John knew then that he wanted to get married in the same church. I also sing regularly at Mother of God. The musicians for our ceremony were all friends of mine, which made the music extra special. And finally our reception venue… I attended a reception in the Arbor Room a few years back, and I fell in love with it. Although we looked at several different venues as most brides do, in the back of my mind I knew I really wanted to have it at the Gardens. Once John gave his approval, it was a done deal. And we could not be happier with our decisions on all of our vendors!
